Protect it.

“Public land is now the public’s responsibility. Don’t let us down. “

-Ex SNRA Forest Service Employee

Public lands and natural spaces are some of the most precious resources we have, and they deserve our respect. When we recreate in these areas—whether it’s hiking, camping, or enjoying the outdoors—we also take on the responsibility of preserving them for future generations.

Recreating responsibly means:

  • Leaving no trace—pack out what you pack in and leave nature as you found it

  • Staying on designated trails to prevent damage to fragile ecosystems

  • Respecting fire safety and being mindful of fire restrictions

  • Properly disposing of waste and participating in clean-up efforts

  • Respecting wildlife and giving animals their space

Every action counts. The way we recreate can either help protect the land or contribute to its degradation. Let’s ensure that our love for nature doesn’t harm it. Be a good tourist—protect it, respect it, and recreate responsibly.

Fake News About Tourism

  • "No one wants you here." → The truth? Most communities welcome visitors—when they respect the land, culture, and locals.

  • "Tourism damages our land." → The real issue? Irresponsible tourism. When done right, tourism can fund conservation, preserve history, and support local economies.

  • "Locals don’t benefit from tourism." → Actually, small businesses, guides, and service workers rely on responsible visitors to keep their communities thriving.

  • "Tourists ruin the culture." → Culture isn’t lost because of visitors—it’s lost when communities aren’t empowered to share and protect it.scription

Nothing can erase the harm done, but you can call your representatives. Write to them.

Raise a stink.

“On Friday, after ten months of permanent employment with the Forest Service on the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, preceded by years of seasonal employment, work with partners, and volunteer work, I was terminated due to my probationary status. I have always been a model employee, taking on far more work than my position description required and consistently receiving good performance reviews. While it is comparatively easy to terminate probationary federal employees, there still must be reason behind that termination. I will share with you the reasoning provided to over 3,000 USFS employees with all different sorts of jobs and duties…”
